Motorists warned over rising number of overseas lorries in the UK
Drivers have been warned that the number of overseas goods vehicles driving on UK roads is on the increase.
According to new figures from insurance provider Liverpool Victoria (LV), the number of foreign lorries has increased by a third since 2001, while it is expected to continue to rise.
The company added that other figures have shown that over 1,300 people a year are injured in incidents involving lorries from overseas.
John O'Roarke, managing director of LV, said: "Over the last seven years we have seen a significant increase in the number of accidents involving lorries from overseas.
"Not only is being involved in an accident with a lorry frightening but it can also be very costly and time consuming, as your insurer may have trouble tracing and communicating with the insurer of the vehicle."
Recent research by Saga Motor Insurance found that drivers could be putting themselves at risk by driving after long-haul flights.
It was found that 1.3 million drivers tend to drink alcohol on journeys back to the UK and drive home afterwards.
